Any idiot out there can see that, so why cannot you see this Mr. Rem?

Vikernes (2010).

Vikernes, therefore, does not have much faith in the truthfulness of Eithun’s statements, and thus casts doubt on the date when Vikernes and Aarseth first met, as well as the date of the opening of the record shop Helvete, a date that remains unclear to this day. Most people state that the shop opened in May/June 1991, or in June 1991, but it is possible that these dates are based on Eithun’s dating in Moynihan (1998).

Vikernes is therefore very clear that he first met Aarseth at his home near Ski in April 1991, that is, before the concert took place, regardless of Rem’s timeline, and before Helvete opened, if we are to believe Eithun’s dating. I see no reason to doubt Vikernes’ claim that his first meeting with Aarseth must have taken place at Aarseth’s home in April 1991. Rem’s claim 3 is therefore incorrect. Vikernes and Aarseth did not meet for the first time at the Morbid Angel concert at Alaska in 1991, but before that, regardless of the date of the concert.

Further down in the article, Vikernes adds the following to his criticism of Rem, thereby also providing a clear indication of when the Morbid Angel concert did not take place:

The next hundred pages he [Rem] talks about Mayhem and Darkthrone and ends up saying that in 1991 – on that Morbid Angel concert in May (and I may add that Morbid Angel played live in Norway in late 1991, perhaps December, and certainly not in May) we had a motto; «Death to Death Metal. Back to Venom. Back to Black Metal from 1982.» And he says: «The road further goes back to Black Metal». Really? Does it? Did it? It is funny, because I was there, and I can tell that all of this is made up nonsense. I don’t know who made it up, but someone obviously has made this up. Is it you Mr. Rem? I have never heard anyone else say something like this, so I can only assume it is. Why?

Let me tell you what «we» (i. e. Euronymous) did agree on in late 1991; the Morbid Angel audience was made up of trendy kids. Death Metal had become a commercial trend and we needed to revolt against this (and a few of us had already; Darkthrone, Immortal and Burzum – and in theory Mayhem too – revolted several months before this magnificent and oh-so-very-important «meeting»).

Vikernes (2010).

According to Vikernes, Morbid Angel certainly did not play at Alaska in the spring of 1991, but rather later in the year. However, he cannot pinpoint the exact date of the concert and believes it may have been in December, which is when Rem claims Morbid Angel’s second concert in Norway that year took place.

So I included the quote for longer than was strictly necessary to convey Vikernes’s view on concert dates. The reason for this is, firstly, that he makes it very clear here that the development of black metal in Norway was a reaction to the commercialisation of death metal. Secondly, he makes what I consider to be an unreasonable criticism, which I think it is important to get out of the way.

Vikernes responds to the following passages from Rem:

The Mayhem lads are aged 22–23. Eithun and Vikernes are 17 and 18 respectively. In the spring and early summer of 1991, the key figures establish contact. Aarseth is in the process of opening his record shop, Helvete, on Schweigaards gate. If anyone turns up in Alaska in white jogging bottoms, they’ll soon be a thing of the past. Bright tracksuits are soon replaced by dark cloaks and leggings. The death metal growl is soon replaced by the black metal scream. The dabbling in socio-political words and expressions in the lyrics is soon replaced by a stronger focus on Satan.

The motto is: Death to death metal. Back to Venom. Back to Black Metal from 1982. The way forward lies in a return to black metal.

Rem (2010), p. 107. My translation.

I do not interpret this as Rem claiming that Vikernes and Aarseth had actually formulated a motto like this, but rather that Rem is referring to what I would call a sociological «we», rather than a conscious, personal and psychological «I». What Rem is trying to say is that the zeitgeist or mindset of Vikernes and Aarseth can be described sociologically as if they had this motto, something for which I believe there is ample evidence in various parts of the literature.

This distinction between a psychological «I» and a sociological «we» seems to me to have been very often misunderstood by the genre’s spokespeople. It is, in fact, the case that black metal as a genre can be said to have been a reaction to the commercialisation of death metal, even though not ALL black metal artists were consciously aware of this. The statement could still be true even if NO ONE ever consciously entertained this thought. The genre’s development and pattern of reaction could nevertheless be described as a reaction to the commercialisation of death metal, through the demonstrably inferior sound compared to the more polished death metal sound and the DIY attitude, amongst other things. So on this point, I think Vikernes misses the mark in his criticism of Rem.

It is also worth noting that when Aarseth started the record store Helvete, the following could be read on the store poster: «Norway’s only specialty store for Death metal. We are the rawest and cheapest.» This very negative attitude towards death metal at the end of the year in 1991, as Vikernes describes it, must have come about in the period between the opening of Helvete, and late in the year 1991.

Morbid Angel had a very hectic May in 1991 on their Blessed Are the Sick tour, which left little room for a stopover in Oslo. There are still gaps in the tour calendar. Their Brazilian tour lasted until April 21, and after that they had a stopover until May 11, where they could potentially have played in Oslo. They also had a stopover on May 18 and 19 when they came from England and went to the Netherlands, on May 27 between two concerts in the Netherlands, and on May 30 between a concert in Germany and one in Poland. That they would have prioritized a stopover in Oslo at these times seems unlikely, and is also not documented. In June they also had a hectic concert schedule, but they could potentially have been in Oslo on the 2nd, 6th, 17th, 20th, 24th, 27th, 29th or 30th. But during that period they are traveling around Germany and eventually south in Europe.

The overview also claims that Morbid Angel played with Sadus during this period, and later also with Unleashed in June. But Sadus also does not claim to have played in Oslo that spring according to their concert overview.5 Unleashed also did not play in Oslo in the spring of 1991 according to their concert schedule.6 Nor did Entombed play there in May/June according to their tour schedule.7

Those who played at Alaska in May and June were The Georgia Satellites, Lenny Kravitz and Stress,8 something that is confirmed by the Student Association itself.9

Konsertdatoer med Morbid Angel i november og desember 1991, hentet fra http://metallipromo.com/morbid.html.

The trio Morbid Angel, Entombed and Unleashed – who Rem claims played together at the May/June concert in Alaska – did not play together until the autumn tour in 1991, which is consistent with the three being able to play at Alaska on November 30, 1991, a date given in the tour schedule from 1991. Rem (2010, p. 58) writes based on Norheim’s statements in the video documentary Once Upon a Time in Norway (2008) that it was an AC/DC concert this happened at, in 1983 or 1984. But as Rem correctly writes, AC/DC did not play in Drammenshallen until 10 February 1986, so it seems more correct that this is at a Dio concert. It seems a bit strange that Rem writes that it is probably the year that is misremembered, and not the band. ↩︎

See Fossberg (2015), p. ? og https://jessheimpuls.no/tung-verdenshistorie-med-startskudd-pa-jessheim/. ↩︎

See the book Påskeaften 1996 (Halvorsrød, 2021), and https://blogg.deichman.no/musikk/2021/06/01/linn-halvorsrod-paskeaften-1996-et-stykke-norsk-musikkhistorie/. ↩︎

See https://web.archive.org/web/20100111072815/http://www.avantgarde-metal.com/content/stories2.php?id=127. ↩︎

See https://www.setlist.fm/setlists/sadus-7bd69e9c.html?page=11 and forward in time. ↩︎

See https://www.setlist.fm/search?page=137&query=unleashed. ↩︎

See https://www.setlist.fm/search?page=130&query=entombed. ↩︎

See https://www.setlist.fm/venue/alaska-oslo-norway-23d6d463.html?page=6. ↩︎

See https://viteboka.studentersamfundet.no/Konserter_på_Chateau_Neuf_1991. ↩︎

See https://www.setlist.fm/search?page=131&query=unleashed. ↩︎

See https://www.setlist.fm/search?page=126&query=entombed. ↩︎

See https://www.setlist.fm/search?page=116&query=morbid+angel.
